Introduction
If you're looking for a koi that combines impressive size, a calm temperament, and a warm, earthy beauty, look no further than the Chagoi. Often called the "friendliest koi," Chagoi are legendary in the koi hobby for their docile nature, their tendency to approach and even hand-feed readily, and their remarkable growth potential. At Crystal Creek Koi Farm, we recommend Chagoi to every pond keeper — not just for their beauty, but for the life they bring to a pond community.
History and Origins
Chagoi (pronounced "cha-goy") takes its name from the Japanese word for tea — "cha" — reflecting the variety's characteristic brown, olive, or tea-colored body. Chagoi are one of the older koi varieties, developed in Japan through selective breeding of wild carp. They belong to the Kawarimono classification — a catch-all category for koi that don't fit neatly into other established variety groups.
Appearance and Color Variations
Chagoi are single-colored koi with a reticulated (net-like) scale pattern similar to Asagi, but in warm, earthy tones rather than blue. Color variations include:
- Brown Chagoi: The classic expression — a warm, rich brown with subtle scale reticulation. The most common and widely kept variety.
- Olive/Green Chagoi: A deeper, more muted olive-green tone. Particularly striking in natural pond settings where the color blends beautifully with aquatic plants.
- Light Tea (Pale Chagoi): A lighter, more golden-brown tone. These fish have a warm, honey-like quality that is especially appealing.
- Doitsu Chagoi: A Chagoi with Doitsu (minimal) scaling. The reduced scales allow the warm body color to appear more vivid and uninterrupted.
The Chagoi Personality: Why They're Special
Beyond their appearance, Chagoi are celebrated for a trait that sets them apart from virtually every other koi variety: their extraordinary friendliness. Chagoi are naturally bold, curious, and unafraid of humans. They are typically the first fish to approach the pond edge at feeding time, and they readily learn to hand-feed — often within days of being introduced to a new pond.
This boldness has a remarkable secondary effect: Chagoi tend to calm the other fish in a pond. When a Chagoi approaches the surface confidently, other koi often follow, becoming more comfortable with human presence over time. For this reason, many experienced koi keepers include at least one Chagoi in every pond as a "calming influence."
Growth Potential
Chagoi are among the fastest-growing and largest koi varieties. Given optimal conditions — excellent water quality, a spacious pond, and a high-quality diet — Chagoi can reach 80–90 cm (31–35 inches) or more. Jumbo Chagoi exceeding 90 cm are not unheard of and are highly prized by collectors. Their impressive size, combined with their friendly temperament, makes them a truly awe-inspiring pond presence.
Quality Standards
A high-quality Chagoi is evaluated on:
- Color depth and consistency: The body color should be rich, deep, and uniform across the entire fish.
- Scale reticulation: The net-like scale pattern should be clearly defined and consistent across the body.
- Body conformation: A deep, broad, well-proportioned body is ideal. Given Chagoi's growth potential, body shape is particularly important.
- Skin quality: The skin should be smooth and lustrous, free of blemishes or discoloration.
Care and Pond Requirements
- Water quality: Maintain ammonia and nitrite at 0 ppm, nitrate below 20 ppm, and pH between 7.0–8.0.
- Temperature: Chagoi thrive in temperatures between 59–77°F (15–25°C) and are cold-hardy for overwintering.
- Pond size: Given their growth potential, a larger pond is strongly recommended — ideally 2,000 gallons or more for Chagoi to reach their full potential.
- Diet: A high-quality, high-protein diet during warmer months supports rapid growth. Chagoi are enthusiastic eaters and will readily accept a variety of foods.
- Compatibility: Chagoi are peaceful and compatible with all other koi varieties. Their calming influence makes them an asset in any mixed pond.
Why Add Chagoi to Your Pond?

Their friendliness, curiosity, and willingness to interact with their keepers transforms the pond experience from passive observation to active connection. Add to this their impressive size, warm earthy beauty, and calming effect on pond mates, and it's easy to see why Chagoi are beloved by beginners and expert collectors alike.
