The Types of Goromo

Goromo come in several distinct sub-varieties, each with its own character:

  • Ai Goromo: The most common type. Features a white body with red hi markings, where each red scale is edged in blue or indigo. The blue edging creates a subtle, layered depth within the red pattern.
  • Sumi Goromo: Similar to Ai Goromo but with black (sumi) edging on the red scales rather than blue. The sumi edging can be more dramatic and pronounced, giving a darker, more intense look.
  • Budo Goromo: The rarest and most prized type. The sumi edging on the scales is so extensive that the red areas appear almost purple — like clusters of grapes ("budo" means grape in Japanese). Budo Goromo are highly sought after by collectors.

Pattern and Quality Standards

A high-quality Goromo is evaluated on:

  • White base (shiroji): Must be clean, bright, and luminous — the same standard as a quality Kohaku.
  • Hi pattern: The red markings should follow Kohaku-style standards — bold, well-defined, and balanced across the body.
  • Scale reticulation: The dark edging on each red scale should be consistent, clearly defined, and uniform across all hi areas. Inconsistent or patchy reticulation is a fault.
  • Head: The head hi should be present and well-shaped, ideally without scale reticulation on the head (a clean, solid red head marking is preferred).

Care and Pond Requirements

Goromo share care requirements with other koi varieties and are generally robust fish:

  • Water quality: Maintain ammonia and nitrite at 0 ppm, nitrate below 20 ppm, and pH between 7.0–8.0.
  • Temperature: Goromo thrive in temperatures between 59–77°F (15–25°C) and are cold-hardy for overwintering.
  • Diet: A high-quality diet with color-enhancing ingredients will help maintain the vibrancy of the hi markings. Avoid overfeeding, which can cloud water and stress fish.
  • Pond size: A minimum of 1,000 gallons is recommended for a healthy koi community.

Color Development Over Time

One of the most fascinating aspects of Goromo is how their pattern evolves with age. Young Goromo (tosai) may show minimal or no scale reticulation — the dark edging often develops and deepens as the fish matures. This means a young Goromo that looks like a plain Kohaku may gradually reveal its true Goromo character over 1–3 years. Patience is essential when evaluating young Goromo.
