Why Water Quality Matters
Koi are highly sensitive to their aquatic environment. Maintaining ideal water quality is the single most important factor in keeping your koi healthy, vibrant, and thriving. Poor water conditions are the leading cause of stress, disease, and premature death in koi ponds.
Key Water Quality Parameters
pH
Ideal Range: 7.0 – 8.5
Koi thrive in slightly alkaline water. Avoid sudden pH swings, which can cause osmotic stress. Test pH daily during the warmer months and after heavy rain events.
Ammonia (NH₃)
Ideal Range: 0 ppm
Ammonia is produced from fish waste, uneaten food, and decaying organic matter. Even trace amounts are toxic to koi. A well-established biological filter is essential for converting ammonia to less harmful compounds.
Nitrite (NO₂)
Ideal Range: 0 ppm
Nitrite is an intermediate byproduct of the nitrogen cycle. Elevated nitrite levels interfere with oxygen transport in koi blood. Ensure your biofilter is fully cycled before stocking fish.
Nitrate (NO₃)
Ideal Range: Below 40 ppm
Nitrate is the end product of the nitrogen cycle and is far less toxic than ammonia or nitrite. Regular water changes (10–20% weekly) help keep nitrate levels in check.
Dissolved Oxygen (DO)
Ideal Range: 7–12 mg/L
Koi require well-oxygenated water, especially in warm weather when oxygen solubility decreases. Waterfalls, air stones, and surface agitation all help maintain adequate DO levels.
Temperature
Ideal Range: 59°F – 77°F (15°C – 25°C)
Koi are cold-water fish but are adaptable. Avoid rapid temperature fluctuations. Metabolism, immune function, and feeding behavior are all temperature-dependent.
KH (Carbonate Hardness / Alkalinity)
Ideal Range: 100–200 ppm
KH acts as a pH buffer, preventing dangerous swings. Low KH can lead to a pH crash, which is often fatal. Add sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) to raise KH if needed.
GH (General Hardness)
Ideal Range: 100–250 ppm
GH measures calcium and magnesium levels, which are important for osmoregulation and overall fish health. Most municipal water sources fall within an acceptable range.
Chlorine & Chloramine
Ideal Range: 0 ppm
Tap water often contains chlorine or chloramine, both of which are toxic to koi and beneficial bacteria. Always use a quality dechlorinator when adding fresh water to your pond.
Testing Recommendations
We recommend testing your pond water at minimum once per week during the active season (spring through fall), and after any significant event such as heavy rain, new fish additions, or equipment changes. Use a reliable liquid test kit for the most accurate results.
