Introduction
If there is one koi variety that truly earns the description "living jewel," it is the Kinginrin. Named for its extraordinary glittering scales — each one reflecting light like a diamond or a mirror — Kinginrin transforms any koi variety into something almost supernatural in its brilliance. At Crystal Creek Koi Farm, Kinginrin are among our most visually spectacular offerings, capable of stopping visitors in their tracks with a single flash of sunlight.
What Is Kinginrin?
Kinginrin (often abbreviated as "Ginrin" or "GR") is not a standalone variety but rather a scale type that can appear on virtually any koi variety. The term "Kinginrin" means "gold and silver scales" in Japanese — "kin" (gold) and "gin" (silver) referring to the two types of reflective scales:
- Kinrin (gold): Scales with a gold or yellow metallic sheen, most visible on red or orange areas of the fish.
- Ginrin (silver): Scales with a silver or white metallic sheen, most visible on white areas of the fish.
In practice, most fish carry both types, and the collective term "Kinginrin" or simply "Ginrin" is used to describe any koi with these sparkling scales.
Types of Kinginrin Scales
There are several distinct types of Kinginrin scale structure, each producing a slightly different sparkling effect:
- Tama Ginrin (Pearl Ginrin): Each scale has a round, pearl-like reflective center. This is the most common and widely appreciated type, producing a soft, even sparkle across the body.
- Kado Ginrin (Edge Ginrin): The reflective quality appears at the edges of the scales rather than the center, creating a different visual texture.
- Beta Ginrin: The entire scale surface is reflective, producing an intense, almost mirror-like shine. Highly prized for its dramatic effect.
- Diamond Ginrin: A particularly brilliant form where the scales sparkle like cut diamonds. Extremely sought after by collectors.
Kinginrin Across Varieties
Because Kinginrin is a scale type rather than a color variety, it can appear on almost any koi. Some of the most popular Kinginrin combinations include:
- Ginrin Kohaku: The sparkling scales on a white-and-red Kohaku create a breathtaking effect.
- Ginrin Sanke: Tri-color Sanke with glittering scales — a show-stopping combination.
- Ginrin Showa: The dramatic black-red-white Showa pattern amplified by sparkling scales.
- Ginrin Chagoi: The warm brown Chagoi with Ginrin scales has a uniquely rich, textured appearance.
Quality Standards
A high-quality Kinginrin koi is evaluated on:
- Scale coverage: Ginrin scales should be distributed evenly and abundantly across the body. A minimum of 20 Ginrin scales in three or more rows is generally required for show classification.
- Sparkle quality: The reflective quality should be consistent, bright, and uniform across all Ginrin scales.
- Underlying pattern: The base variety (Kohaku, Sanke, etc.) must still meet its own quality standards. Ginrin scales should enhance, not mask, the underlying pattern.
Care and Pond Requirements
Kinginrin koi have the same care requirements as their base variety. Key considerations:
- Water quality: Pristine water is essential. Maintain ammonia and nitrite at 0 ppm, nitrate below 20 ppm, and pH between 7.0–8.0.
- Lighting: Natural sunlight dramatically enhances the sparkle of Ginrin scales. Position your pond to receive adequate sunlight for the best visual effect.
- Diet: A high-quality, balanced diet supports overall health and scale condition.
- Pond size: A minimum of 1,000 gallons is recommended for a healthy koi community.
Why Add Kinginrin to Your Pond?
Kinginrin koi are simply unlike anything else in the pond hobby. When sunlight catches their scales, the effect is genuinely magical — a shimmer and sparkle that no photograph can fully capture. Whether you choose a Ginrin Kohaku, a Ginrin Sanke, or any other combination, you're adding a fish that will be the undisputed star of your pond.
