Ogon Varieties (Excluding Yamabuki)
While Yamabuki Ogon (yellow-gold) is perhaps the most widely known, the Ogon family includes several other spectacular varieties:
- Platinum Ogon (Purachina): The most popular non-Yamabuki Ogon. A pure, brilliant silver-white metallic koi that gleams like polished platinum in sunlight. Platinum Ogon are among the most striking fish in any pond and are highly sought after for their clean, luminous appearance.
- Orange Ogon: A warm, deep orange metallic koi with a rich, burnished glow. Less common than Platinum, Orange Ogon are prized for their warm, sunset-like coloration.
- Kin Ogon (Gold Ogon): A deep, rich gold metallic koi — distinct from Yamabuki in its deeper, more orange-gold tone. True Kin Ogon have a warm, antique gold appearance.

- Metallic luster: The defining quality of any Ogon. The metallic sheen should be intense, consistent, and cover the entire body from head to tail, including the fins.

- Head luster: The head should display the same metallic quality as the body. A dull or patchy head is a significant fault.
- Fin quality: Fins should be clean, well-formed, and display the same metallic luster as the body.
- Body conformation: A deep, well-proportioned body is ideal. Ogon are often bred to large sizes, and a big, well-shaped Ogon is particularly impressive.
Care and Pond Requirements
- Water quality: Maintain ammonia and nitrite at 0 ppm, nitrate below 20 ppm, and pH between 7.0–8.0. Clean water is especially important for Ogon, as their metallic scales are most brilliant in clear conditions.
- Temperature: Ogon thrive in temperatures between 59–77°F (15–25°C) and are cold-hardy for overwintering.

- Diet: A high-quality staple diet supports overall health. Spirulina-based foods can enhance the metallic sheen over time.
