Introduction
Of all the koi varieties, none carries a more iconic or symbolically powerful image than the Tancho. Named after the Japanese Red-Crowned Crane — Japan's national bird and a symbol of luck, longevity, and purity — the Tancho koi is defined by a single, perfectly circular red spot on an otherwise pure white head. It is minimalism elevated to art. At Crystal Creek Koi Farm, we regard Tancho as one of the most emotionally resonant varieties in the koi world.
History and Origins
The Tancho pattern is not a separate genetic variety but rather a specific pattern classification that can occur in several koi varieties. The name and concept draw directly from the Tancho crane (Grus japonensis), whose distinctive red crown patch is mirrored in the koi's head marking. Tancho koi are most commonly found in Kohaku, Sanke, and Showa base varieties, though the Tancho Kohaku is by far the most celebrated.
Types of Tancho
- Tancho Kohaku: A pure white body with a single red circular spot on the head and no other red markings anywhere on the body. This is the purest and most prized expression of the Tancho pattern.
- Tancho Sanke: A white body with black sumi markings and a single red Tancho spot on the head. No red appears elsewhere on the body.
- Tancho Showa: A black-based Showa with a Tancho head spot. The interplay of black, white, and the single red crown creates a dramatic effect.
The Tancho Spot: Quality Standards
The Tancho spot is everything — its quality determines the value of the fish. Judges evaluate:
- Shape: The ideal Tancho spot is perfectly circular, like a coin or a rising sun. Oval, irregular, or asymmetrical spots are considered faults.
- Placement: The spot should be centered on the head, ideally between the eyes. Off-center placement reduces the fish's show value.
- Color: The red should be deep, vivid, and consistent throughout the spot. Fading edges or pale centers are faults.
- Edges: Clean, well-defined edges are essential. Blurry or bleeding edges detract from the spot's impact.
- Size: The spot should be proportionate to the head — neither too small to be impactful nor so large it loses its crown-like quality.
Body Standards
Beyond the Tancho spot, the rest of the fish must also meet high standards:
- The white body (shiroji) must be pure, bright, and completely free of any red markings. Even a single stray hi scale can disqualify a Tancho from its classification.
- Body conformation should be excellent — a deep, torpedo-shaped body with clean fins.
- For Tancho Sanke and Showa, the sumi markings must meet the standards of their respective varieties.
Care and Pond Requirements
- Water quality: Maintain ammonia and nitrite at 0 ppm, nitrate below 20 ppm, and pH between 7.0–8.0.
- Temperature: Tancho thrive in temperatures between 59–77°F (15–25°C) and are cold-hardy for overwintering.
- Diet: A high-quality diet with color-enhancing ingredients will help maintain the vibrancy of the Tancho spot. Avoid overfeeding.
- Pond size: A minimum of 1,000 gallons is recommended for a healthy koi community.
Rarity and Value
True Tancho Kohaku — with a perfectly circular, centered red spot and a completely clean white body — are genuinely rare. Because the pattern depends on the red markings being confined entirely to the head spot, finding a specimen that meets all quality criteria is a matter of both genetics and luck. This rarity, combined with the variety's deep cultural symbolism, makes high-quality Tancho among the most valuable koi in the world.
Why Add Tancho to Your Pond?
A Tancho koi is more than a fish — it is a symbol. The image of a pure white koi with a single red crown gliding through clear water is one of the most serene and beautiful sights in the pond hobby. For collectors who appreciate meaning, symbolism, and refined simplicity, Tancho is an irreplaceable addition.
