What Is the Gosanke?
In the koi world, the term Gosanke (meaning "the three families" in Japanese) refers to the three most prestigious and widely celebrated koi varieties: the Kohaku, the Taisho Sanke, and the Showa Sanshoku. These three varieties dominate koi shows worldwide and are considered the gold standard of the hobby. If you're serious about koi keeping, understanding the Gosanke is essential.
Kohaku — The King of Koi
The Kohaku is the most iconic koi variety in existence — a pure snow-white (Shiro) body adorned with bold, deep red (Hi) markings. Its beauty lies in its elegant simplicity: two colors, perfectly balanced, endlessly variable.

- What to look for: Clean white ground, vivid Hi with crisp edges, balanced pattern from head to tail

Taisho Sanke — The Aristocrat
The Taisho Sanke (often called simply "Sanke") adds a third color to the Kohaku's palette — precise black (Sumi) spots layered over the red-and-white pattern. The result is a sophisticated, refined fish that rewards close inspection.
- Colors: White (Shiro) base, red (Hi) markings, black (Sumi) spots
- What to look for: Clean white ground, well-placed Sumi spots that complement (not overwhelm) the Hi, no black on the head
- Why it's special: The Sanke's three-color balance is notoriously difficult to achieve — a well-patterned Sanke is a true work of art.

Showa Sanshoku — The Bold One
The Showa Sanshoku shares the same three colors as the Sanke — white, red, and black — but with a dramatically different character. Where the Sanke has a white base with black accents, the Showa has a black (Sumi) base with red and white overlaid on top. The result is a bolder, more dramatic fish with a completely different visual energy.

- What to look for: Sumi wrapping around the body, Hi and Shiro in balanced proportion, black present on the head

The easiest way to distinguish the three:
- Two colors (red + white): Kohaku
- Three colors, white base, no black on head: Taisho Sanke
- Three colors, black base, black on head: Showa Sanshoku
Which Gosanke Is Right for Your Pond?
