A koi breaking the surface repeatedly, mouth opening wide as if it is trying to breathe air, is not simply being hungry or playful. If you are asking, why are koi gasping, treat it as a pond emergency until water testing proves otherwise. Koi are living art for your water garden, but their beauty depends on stable, oxygen-rich water and close observation when behavior changes.
A few moments at the surface after feeding can be normal. Persistent surface gulping, especially when several fish are involved, is a warning that the pond may not be supplying enough usable oxygen or that water quality has become unsafe. The right response is calm, fast, and measured. Do not reach first for medication. Improve oxygen, test the water, and identify the cause.
Why Are Koi Gasping at the Surface?
Koi do not breathe atmospheric air the way some fish species can. They move water across their gills, where dissolved oxygen passes into their bloodstream. When dissolved oxygen is low, gills are irritated, or toxins interfere with respiration, koi may congregate near waterfalls, returns, skimmers, or the pond edge and gulp at the surface.
The most common trigger is low dissolved oxygen. Warm water holds less oxygen than cool water, and oxygen levels naturally fall overnight because plants, algae, fish, and beneficial bacteria all consume oxygen in darkness. A pond that looks fine in the afternoon can become stressful before sunrise, particularly during a summer heat wave.
Water quality is the other major concern. Ammonia and nitrite can damage or impair the gills, making fish appear oxygen-starved even when the pond has decent circulation. Chlorine or chloramine exposure after an untreated water change can cause severe respiratory distress. A sudden pH swing, excessive organic debris, an algae crash, or a failing pump can create the same visible symptom.
When one koi is gasping while the rest behave normally, look more closely at that individual fish. Gill irritation, parasites, bacterial gill disease, or an obstruction may be involved. When many koi are gasping, assume the issue is environmental first.
What to Do Immediately
Start by adding as much aeration and surface movement as you can. Turn on air pumps, waterfalls, fountains, venturis, and returns. If a pump is off, restore circulation only if you can do so safely and without stirring a large amount of foul debris into the pond. Aim return flow upward so it breaks the surface. Surface agitation is what allows oxygen to enter the water.
Next, stop feeding for 24 to 48 hours. Food increases waste, and digestion raises the fish's oxygen demand. Healthy koi can comfortably miss a few meals while you stabilize the pond. In a stressed pond, feeding is not a kindness.
Then test the water before adding treatments. At minimum, check ammonia, nitrite, pH, and temperature. If you have a dissolved oxygen meter, use it, especially during early morning hours. Record the results rather than relying on memory. A number that seems only slightly off can matter when high temperature, heavy stocking, and limited aeration occur together.
If ammonia or nitrite is detectable, perform a partial water change with properly conditioned water. A 10 to 20 percent change is often safer than replacing a large volume at once, particularly if the source water differs greatly in temperature or pH. Continue aeration throughout the process. Never add untreated municipal water directly to a koi pond.
If the fish are rolling, lying over, unable to remain upright, showing red or pale gills, or still gasping hard after aeration and a measured water change, contact a qualified aquatic veterinarian or experienced koi health professional promptly. Severe respiratory distress can become fatal quickly.
Low Oxygen: The Most Common Cause
A pond can have clear water and still suffer from low oxygen. Water clarity is not a measure of dissolved oxygen, and an attractive waterfall does not always provide enough exchange for the pond volume and fish load.
High water temperature is a frequent summer culprit. As water warms, it carries less oxygen while koi become more active and require more of it. Large koi, premium collections, and heavily fed ponds need especially thoughtful aeration. The same is true after adding new fish, when biological filtration must process a larger waste load.
Nighttime deserves attention. Aquatic plants and algae produce oxygen in daylight, but they consume oxygen after dark. Dense plant growth can be beautiful in a water garden, yet it may compete with fish in a small or heavily stocked pond. An intense green-water algae bloom can also produce ample daytime oxygen, then pull oxygen down dangerously at night. If fish gasp at dawn but recover later in the day, oxygen depletion is highly likely.
Mechanical problems can be just as simple. Check that air stones are bubbling, airline tubing is not kinked, filters are flowing, and the pump intake is not blocked with leaves or string algae. In warm weather, it is wise to run dedicated aeration around the clock rather than relying on a waterfall alone.
Water Quality Problems That Irritate Koi Gills
Ammonia should be zero in an established koi pond. It commonly rises after overfeeding, adding fish too quickly, cleaning filter media too aggressively, a filter failure, or a sudden die-off in beneficial bacteria. Ammonia burns delicate gill tissue and may cause fish to gasp, clamp their fins, hang near moving water, or become unusually still.
Nitrite should also be zero. It interferes with the blood's ability to carry oxygen, so fish can appear to suffocate even in well-aerated water. This is why adding an air pump alone may not solve the visible problem. The pond needs both oxygen and a functioning nitrogen cycle.
A pH reading outside a reasonable range deserves attention, but stability matters as much as the number. Koi generally do well in a stable, moderately alkaline pond. Rapid pH movement, often tied to very low alkalinity, can stress fish and filtration. Test pH at different times of day if an algae bloom or unstable source water is suspected.
Do not overlook recent maintenance. A pond treated with algaecide, a strong medication, or a large dose of oxidizing cleaner may lose oxygen or experience gill irritation. Some treatments also reduce the biological filter's effectiveness. Follow product directions precisely, remove activated carbon only when appropriate, and increase aeration whenever treating water.
When Gasping May Be a Fish Health Issue
If water parameters are sound and only one or two koi are struggling, inspect from a distance before netting the fish. Look for flashing or rubbing against surfaces, excess mucus, clamped fins, redness around the gill covers, ulcers, rapid breathing, or one gill cover held partly open. These signs can point toward parasites, bacterial infection, or gill damage.
Parasites are not diagnosed by appearance alone. Unnecessary treatments can add stress, reduce oxygen, and disrupt a pond that is already compromised. The most reliable route is a microscope examination of skin and gill samples by someone trained to collect and interpret them. That approach protects your fish from guesswork and helps ensure the treatment fits the actual problem.
Quarantine also matters. New koi should be introduced thoughtfully, with water temperature and chemistry considered during acclimation and a separate quarantine process whenever possible. Even hand-selected koi of exceptional quality need time to adjust to a new pond's unique water conditions.
Prevent Gasping Before the Next Hot Day
The best prevention is to design for the pond's peak demand, not its average day. Size aeration for warm summer nights, maintain a filter matched to the fish load, and avoid crowding a pond simply because the fish are still small. Koi grow, eat, and produce more waste over time.
Keep a dependable test kit on hand and make testing routine after storms, heat waves, power interruptions, filter cleaning, medication, or the addition of new fish. Feed a quality diet in portions your koi finish promptly, then reduce feeding as water quality, temperature, or fish behavior requires. Remove decaying leaves and excess organic debris before they become an oxygen-consuming burden.
A backup plan is equally valuable. A battery-powered air pump or generator can protect a treasured collection during a power outage, when circulation and oxygen can disappear at the worst possible moment. For ponds with valuable koi, that preparation is part of responsible ownership, not an extra.
Your koi will often tell you that something is wrong before a test strip does. When they abandon their usual graceful movement for repeated surface gulping, give them more air, reduce the load on the water, and let careful testing guide the next move. Prompt, patient action can preserve both the health of the fish and the calm beauty they bring to your water garden.
