The Dragon That Changes With the Seasons
The Hi Kumonryu is one of the most captivating koi in the hobby — a bold black-and-white Kumonryu with a distinctive orange or red hi marking that sets it apart from the standard variety. This 10"–12" Select specimen displays the dramatic cloud-like Kumonryu pattern with a warm orange accent just behind the head, creating a striking three-color effect against the deep black base and white patches.
Like all Kumonryu, this fish is famous for its color-changing nature — the black and white pattern can shift dramatically with the seasons and water temperature. A fish that looks mostly black today may be mostly white next year. The orange hi marking, however, remains a consistent identifier of the Hi Kumonryu variety.
What Makes This Fish Special
- Bold black base with white cloud-like patches — classic Kumonryu pattern
- Distinctive orange hi marking just behind the head — the Hi Kumonryu signature
- Color-changing variety — pattern shifts with seasons and water temperature
- Select grade — chosen for pattern boldness, body conformation, and color contrast
- 10"–12" size — an established fish ready to be a dynamic centerpiece in your pond
Care Notes
Kumonryu thrive in well-maintained ponds with strong filtration and consistent water quality. Feed a high-quality diet like Blackwater Color Enhancing or Blackwater Ultimate Combo Diet to support overall health. Minimum pond size of 1,000 gallons recommended.
