Fire Over Shadow — The Hi Utsuri

The Hi Utsuri is one of the most visually striking koi in the Utsurimono family — a variety defined by its commanding jet-black (Sumi) base dramatically overlaid with bold, blazing red-orange (Hi) markings. Unlike the Showa, there is no white — just the raw, primal contrast of fire and shadow playing across every inch of the body.

This 12"–14" farm-raised specimen from Crystal Creek Koi Farm is a mature, healthy fish with vivid Hi coloration and well-defined Sumi — a Select Grade Hi Utsuri that brings serious visual impact to any pond.

Hand-training your koi is a journey, not a switch you flip. Building that trust takes time — sometimes weeks, sometimes months — and it starts with showing up consistently at the water's edge. Every koi is different, and every pond relationship has its own pace. The reward is a fish that knows your footsteps and comes to meet you. How to Hand-Train Your Koi →
